Brisbane City Council's planetarium officially opened its doors in May 24th 1978. It was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, a Scottish astronomer and also the appointed governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. In 1822, he established the first significant observatory at Parramatta for mapping the southern skies.

You can find Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium’s gleaming white building which was designed by architect William Job, Queensland’s 2001 architect of the year in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha. Brisbane City Council's Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium hosts a variety of shows that are both entertaining and informative which is held in their Cosmic Skydome, a 12.5-metre-diameter projection dome.

  • Moons: Worlds of Mystery: The moon is a pretty spectacular celestial body as its gravitational pull affects tides on Earth. Understand and learn more about it in through this presentation produced by the Boston Museum of Science.
  • Passport to the Universe: Want to journey through the Solar System? Then you will enjoy this presentation which is narrated by Tom Hanks.
  • Saturday Night 'Live': Are you ready for a live full-dome space-flight? Don’t miss this show.
  • Starlight: Constellations, ancient cultures and the lives of stars? You will learn everything about these in this show.
  • Tales of a Time Traveler: Journey back in time to the birth of the universe narrated by David Tennant.
  • We Are Aliens!: Is Earth the only planet with life? Hunt for evidence of alien life narrated by Rupert Grint.
